1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 cup sugar (for chocolate batter)

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 cup water

Prepare the Caramel: In a medium saucepan, heat the 1 cup of sugar over medium heat. Do not stir; instead, gently swirl the pan until the sugar melts and turns a golden brown. Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

    Blend the Liquids: In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

      Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, remaining 1 cup sugar, vegetable oil, water, and salt until just combined.

        Layer the Mixture: Slowly pour the chocolate batter over the caramel-coated pan. Then, gently pour the milk mixture over the chocolate batter. Do not stir; they will create a layered effect as they bake.

          Bake the Chocoflan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the cake pan inside a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with hot water, creating a bain-marie (water bath). Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

            Cool the Chocoflan: Once baked, remove the chocoflan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about 15 minutes. Then, carefully remove it from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature.

              Invert and Serve: Once cooled, run a knife around the edges of the pan to loosen the flan. Place a serving plate over the cake pan and quickly invert it. The caramel will drizzle down over the flan. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving for the best texture.
